The study also found that dairy products such as cheese, milk and yogurt are the most nutritious food items.
It is not just cheese and milk that are important for good health, it is also whole grain breads, cereals, pulses and other products.
“Our findings are consistent with previous studies that show dairy is beneficial in helping to control blood sugar levels and improving metabolic health, and it is a good source of protein,” Dr David Kowalczyk, from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the study’s lead author, said.
The research involved more than 1,000 Australians aged between 19 and 74.
The results showed that while milk and cheese had higher nutritional value than other foods, it was not as important as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
This meant that people who consumed more dairy products were more likely to be overweight or obese, as well as having more medical conditions.
The findings could help scientists develop more efficient and more affordable ways to produce dairy products, the study authors said.
Dr Kowelczyk said that the findings may also help the dairy industry understand how to improve the nutritional value of dairy products and other foods.
“It is encouraging that our findings are relevant to the dairy sector, which contributes a large share of the nutritional content in milk, milk products and dairy products.
This study highlights the importance of supporting dairy producers with new and novel dairy products,” he said.
