How to avoid spinach, chickpeas, and other health problems

Health experts say the nutritional quality of many vegetables, fruits, and grains is compromised by the presence of certain chemicals in processed foods.
The chemicals, often added to increase their shelf life and flavor, may be harmful to human health, according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization.
Health officials are also worried about the long-term health effects of the chemicals, which are often added after processing or when ingredients are altered in other ways.
In some cases, the chemicals are also used in the manufacture of food ingredients such as corn syrup.
These chemicals may also be present in some food products, including beverages, but not in the raw materials themselves.
To address this issue, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a list of foods that should not contain chemicals in their raw materials.
The list includes foods that were processed in a way that didn’t change their quality, such as in the processing of sugar, and foods that contain more than a few chemicals that weren’t used in processing, such a coloring agent or preservative.
These food groups are not necessarily the same as those listed in the FDA’s proposed list, the academy’s report said.
Many food manufacturers have voluntarily eliminated these chemicals from their products, but some have not.
To help consumers make healthier choices, consumers should be aware of how foods are processed and how these chemicals affect their health.
In order to reduce the number of foods containing chemicals in the foods they eat, the Institute of Medicine recommends that consumers avoid using processed meats, eggs, and dairy products, as well as certain kinds of processed meats.
In addition, consumers are encouraged to limit their consumption of refined grains and sugar-sweetened beverages.
