The next time you see a TV ad touting the virtues of kale or broccoli, ask yourself if the kale you’re eating is really the best.
Not only does kale not have the health benefits of broccoli, but it has a tendency to turn into a food that’s not all that healthy.
“You need to look at the ingredients,” says Dr. Stephen Schwartz, director of the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Center for Vegetarian Nutrition.
“Kale, unlike other leafy greens, does not contain all the nutrients you’d need to keep you healthy.”
That leaves the broccoli, and its associated fat and cholesterol, to fill in the gaps.
The truth is, it’s a good idea to start eating a lot of leafy green vegetables to reap the healthful benefits.
The healthiest foods to eat are whole foods, and the majority of those foods are the same in both leafy and broccoli varieties.
To get the healthiest of your greens, you need to start with the same food, and not just add something new.
It’s a win-win.
